Beaver Scouts Listen to Stories
Beaver Scouts are enthralled entertained and enthused by hearing a good story. The story can take many forms – adventure, fairy tales, fables, myths and mysteries. They can be read or told to the Colony.
Story telling can have a variety of purposes:
- To develop fantasy and imagination;
- To help Beavers learn something;
- To create atmosphere and provide a theme;
- To enjoy a quiet time together as a colony;
- To encourage listening skills.
Over a period of time, a good Colony will provide Beaver Scouts with opportunities to:
- Hear and respond to a variety of stories;
- Listen to stories from different sources and cultures;
- Hear stories from different adults.
Ideas that can be used in the meeting
- Get the Beavers to tell a well known story
- Act out parts of the story
- Link stories into particular times of the year e.g. Guy Fawkes at Bonfire Night
- To start a tale and the Beavers to add their own ideas to events of the tale
- To make alternative versions of the fairy tales
- To link stories into a theme night on a country being visited
- To write a sentence and try and link them together to make a Colony story.
