Beaver Scouts Listen to Stories

Beaver Scouts are enthralled entertained and enthused by hearing a good story. The story can take many forms – adventure, fairy tales, fables, myths and mysteries. They can be read or told to the Colony.

Story telling can have a variety of purposes:

  • To develop fantasy and imagination;

  • To help Beavers learn something;

  • To create atmosphere and provide a theme;

  • To enjoy a quiet time together as a colony;

  • To encourage listening skills.

Over a period of time, a good Colony will provide Beaver Scouts with opportunities to:

  • Hear and respond to a variety of stories;

  • Listen to stories from different sources and cultures;

  • Hear stories from different adults.

Ideas that can be used in the meeting

  1. Get the Beavers to tell a well known story

  2. Act out parts of the story

  3. Link stories into particular times of the year e.g. Guy Fawkes at Bonfire Night

  4. To start a tale and the Beavers to add their own ideas to events of the tale

  5. To make alternative versions of the fairy tales

  6. To link stories into a theme night on a country being visited

  7. To write a sentence and try and link them together to make a Colony story.
