ScoutBase UK
Programme - Cub Scouts

Fitness

In the Fitness Zone your Cub Scouts will get the chance to:

  • understand how their body works
  • know how to keep fit and healthy
  • take part in a variety of fitness activities
  • discover their physical capability.

You can help your Cub Scouts to set personal targets and encourage them to reach them. For example, you might try to help a Cub Scout who is afraid of water by gradually helping them overcome their fear, a step at a time.

Why should this Zone be covered?

Children have natural energy. They need to keep themselves fit and have a lot of fun at the same time. Encourage your Cub Scouts to be more active. It is your job to show them they can have more fun outside than slumped in front of the TV or huddled over a computer.

Any new skill, whether it is swimming, learning about First Aid or ice skating, should be learned in the same way:

  • gradually
  • carefully
  • competently.

Where the Pack is keen to try an activity new to you, then this is a chance to ask for some expert help. Most enthusiasts are only too pleased to be asked.

Safety first

You have the responsibility to ensure the appropriate activity rules are followed (see Policy, Organisation and Rules), and that the proper equipment is used. Seek advice from your District if you are unsure.

Linking Challenge Award

The Fitness Challenge links with the Fitness Programme Zone. This encourages Cubs to get fitter, to find about good diet, exercise and the need for sleep, and to try two sports or physical activities that are new to them.
