Explorer Scout eNews January 2009

Welcome

Welcome to this month's eNews, we hope you had a good Christmas and that your new year is going well.

If you want to get in touch, Gemma Veitch in the Programme Team office at Gilwell Park can be contacted at either programme@scout.org.uk or by calling 0845 300 1818.

Explorer Scouts: Taking the Lead

This resource has been revised and redesigned, and in the Spring it will be re-launched. A copy will be available on CD for you in due course.

Please encourage all Explorer Scout Leaders to use it to support and develop leadership skills amongst their Explorer Scouts - including setting up and running Unit and District Forums.

ESL (YL) Training Weekends

Two training weekends specifically for those carrying out the adult role of ESL(YL) supporting the Young Leaders' Scheme. They will take place this Spring:

21/22th February 2009 at Gilwell Park www.scouts.org.uk/events.php

14/15th March 2009 in Leeds www.scouts.org.uk/events.php

These weekends will support those working towards a Wood Badge for this role, and cover all aspects of the Young Leaders' Scheme from operating the Young Leaders' Unit to delivery of the Modules to supporting sponsoring section leaders.

Places can be booked by down loading the form from the above webpages

If you have any queries please contact programme@scout.org.uk

Young Leaders Essentials

Apologies to those of you who have been trying in vain to order copies of Young Leaders' Essentials. The good news is that the 2008 edition is now available again.

More good news - in 2009/2010 we plan to produce a supplementary book - "Young Leaders' Essentials Plus" - which will be filled with different methods for delivering the Modules of the Young Leaders' Scheme, as well as helpful ideas to support the Young Leaders' Unit and resources to make the Scheme as successful as possible.

If you have developed any different methods locally for the delivery of the Young Leaders' Scheme Modules we would be really keen to hear from you by contacting Gemma on programme@scout.org.uk

Local Support Events

If you plan to run your own local support event for leaders, to promote the development of Explorer Scouting in your patch, and would like advice or support, please feel free to ask by contacting Gemma Veitch in the Programme Team office at Gilwell Park on programme@scout.org.uk

Information about the sort of support we are able to offer can be found at:

www.scoutbase.org.uk/6to25/explorer/supportdaysinformation.pdf

Please note that we can usually accommodate requests if we have at least 6 months notice - any less notice than this and we will try, but our diary fills up fast, so book early.

Young Leader Certificate

As mentioned in the last issue of eNews, this will be available from Scoutshops in March. We hope it will be presented to all Young Leaders when they leave the scheme - whether they complete all of the modules and missions, or just some. As well as giving them a record of what they have achieved as Young Leaders, it also explains the options available to them in Scouting when they reach 18.

It will also be a useful record of prior learning which they can show to a Training Adviser if and when they start to work towards a Wood Badge if they become an adult leader after leaving the Explorer Scout section.

Chief Scout Award Certificates

A template is now avalible which allows you to print the name, unit and date onto the Chief Scout Award Certificates.

The template can be found at;

www.scoutbase.org.uk/6to25/explorer/resources/certs.htm

Our youth websites are changing!

In March, our youth sites will be retired in their current form. In the meantime, consultation and review with volunteers, parents and of course young people is taking place to determine the best sort of provision for our youth members online. If you have thoughts and ideas on this subject, we would be grateful to hear them at web.team@scout.org.uk Basic badge requirements and programme descriptions will still be available at this link:

www.scouts.org.uk/explorers

Partnership Agreements

In 2008 we surveyed a large number of Group Scout Leaders for their experiences and views about the way Partnership Agreements are used in Districts.

The results of that survey will be summerised and published online at: www.scoutbase.org.uk/6to25/explorer/ in the near future

We plan to use the results of the survey to review the effectiveness of Partnership Agreements, with a view to issuing renewed guidance later in the year.

Development, Advice and Support Days

The team have been out during the back end of last year attending the first batch of workshops. It has been great fun meeting many of you and in particular, getting feedback on what is happening in your Region. We are looking forward to meeting the rest of you at your own workshops in the next couple of months.

The Development, Advice and Support days have been held in a number of Regions across England since October '08. Feedback received so far has been extremely positive. If you are an adult supporting sections you will be contacted directly with further details of the forthcoming days.

The dates for the next days are:

North West of England - 08/02/09

Scotland - 13-15/02/09

Wales - 28/03/09

Please also remember that the presentations are available online for you to use to support Scouting locally.

Your Programme, Your Voice

Your Programme, Your Voice is an online questionnaire that is sent out 3 times a year. It helps the Programme Team to define the challenges, to focus on areas where support is most needed and to bust myths.

It was trialed with the Cub Scout section in February and May 2008, and in November 2008 it was extended to the Beaver Scout and Scout section. This year the Your Programme, Your Voice will be extended to the Scout Network initially followed by the Explorer Scout section in early summer.

A representative sample of adults involved in the Explorer Scout section will be invited to take part in Your Programme, Your Voice and we will sending these invites nearer the time.
