Explorer Scout Events

Below you will find a listing of events opened up to Explorer Scouts around the UK.

Please note: Events that are advertised here are not formally endorsed by The Scout Association (unless stated). This is simply a place for them to be advertised. The UK Scout Headquarters therefore takes no organisational responsibility for these events. The Scout Association is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.

Do you have an event coming up in your patch thats open to Explorer Scouts across the UK? If you do, please let us know about it and we'll advertise it for free!.

It's quick and easy - here's what information you need to let us have.

  • A quick text description of the event. What, Who, When, Where
  • A graphic/picutre thats roughly 120 pixels wide by 180 pixels high
  • A website link or a document containing further details (we can host documents on this site)
  • Then email the Explorer Scout office at programme@scout.org.uk letting us have all of the above, details of who you are and some contact details. We'll do the rest.

    March - December 2009: Youth Groups Challenge

    Cadets and Youth Groups Challenge

    What: The challenge is a competition involving cadets and youth groups from 12-18. You have to cover a distance of 13.1 mile, but in an imaginative, innovative way.

    Who: St. John Ambulance cadets, Army, Sea and Air Cadets, Young Firefighters and Police Cadets, Girl Guides and Explorer Scout.

    When: the competition runs from March to Mid December 2009

    Where: it's up to you where you do your challenge, preferably in your own area to maximise publicity

    What: This year our camps are bigger and better than ever before. From Action Adventure to Urban Vibe there's sure to be something for you...

    Who: For young people aged 10 - 16 and new for 2009 - Future Leader camp for 17 - 19 year olds

    June - August 2009: Adventure Offshore

    Adventure Offshore

    What: A number of berths are still available on board the Scout yachts Ocean Scout and Offshore Scout this summer. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience offshore sailing and visit some of the interesting port towns in Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea whilst delivering the boats to the start port for the famous Tall Ships Race series, or returning the boats to the UK following a summer participating in the races in the Baltic.

    There are also some places left on the official Tall Ships Cruise In Company; during which you would sail from Russia to Finland in company with other sail training vessels from around the world.

    Who: These are suitable for anyone from Explorer age upwards - including Network and Leaders, it's not restricted to people within Scouting and you don't need any experience

    When:

  • 20-27 June: Ipswich - Cuxhaven ( Germany )
  • 27 June - 3 July: Cuxhaven - Gdynia (Race one start port, Poland )
  • Tall Ships cruise in company:

  • Return delivery legs following the Tall Ships races:

  • 1-9 August: Klaipeda (Race two finish port, Lithuania ) -Cuxhaven ( Germany )

    June 2009: Monopoly Run

    Humberside Explorer Scouts Monopoly Run 2009

    Who: Teams of Scouts/Explorers within the North East Region. Please note that Scouts must be aged 12 and over on the day of the event

    What: After leaving 'GO' teams will use their score sheet to navigate around the venues within the Hull City Centre area and at each location the teams will answer questions, complete tasks or take part in challenges to earn prizes. Teams can also use the day for shopping and/or visiting the local free museums such as the Ferens Art Gallery, Maritime Museum, Streetlife Museum and Wilberforce House. The day will end with an evening of fun, challenge and adventure on the campsite.

    When: 26 - 28th June 2009

    Where: Raywell Park Activity Centre, Humberside Scout HQ, with the Monopoly Run itself taking part within Hull City Centre

    Who: Scouts and Explorers

    What: A 24 hour pedal car race at the superb Shenington Go-Kart track.

    June 2009: Open Uni Event

    Open University Event - 2009

    What: To celebrate the Open University's 40th birthday the Milton Keynes campus is opening its doors for a unique opportunity to see how concepts become reality and would like to invite you to attend!

    What's on offer:

  • Ever fancied a peek into James Bond's department Q - source of all his clever gadgets? The Open University has scientists working on technology that may feature in action movies in the next few years and be in our homes as standard in ten years.
  • If you have seen the BBC television programmes Coast or The Fossil Detectives you may have wondered how they get made. And how about the science that lies behind them?
  • See if you have what it takes to be an educational TV presenter of tomorrow
  • Take a trip back in time to the 1970s
  • Hear about exploration of space at its outer reaches
  • Who: The event is suitable for all; we have good disabled access, are easily reached by car/coach but will also run a shuttle from MK Central station.

    The event is free of charge and no need to book unless you are coming as a coach load!

    July 2009: DRAGNET

    DRAGNET

    What: What: The Dragnet Challenge is to make your way through a narrow corridor of land in the Cumbrian Lake district covering a distance of around 35 miles. Teams of four have to navigate from Friday night until Sunday morning back to the defined base camp from the secret drop off point. On the way you must avoid capture from teams of experienced catchers who can take one of of three life cards which will reduce your chance of winning the competition. The winning teams must have the maximum number of lives and run into the base camp closest to 11am on the Sunday.

    The Event is organised by Cumbria Explorer Scouts

    When: 3-5 July 2009 (First full weekend in July every year).

    July 2009: Pathfinder

    Pathfinder

    What: A choice of over 25 activities with expert instructors available to teach you. Daytime activities are based on and offsite, all your transportation is provided to and from these venues as part of your fee. The evening entertainment consisting of the Challenge Cup based onsite and the famous "disco" by DJ Fitz held in large offsite dance club

    Who: Explorer Scouts/Guides aged 14 to 18 years.

    July 2009: Gilwell 24

    Gilwell 24

    What: The event consists of 24 long hard hours of fun and activities where half of the challenge is just keeping going until the bitter end.

    Who: Open to all Explorer Scouts and Senior Section Guides aged 14-18 and those linking to these sections.

    When: Saturday 11th July (9am) until Sunday 12th July 2009 9am

    July 2009: Monopoly Live

    Monopoly Live

    What: Each team has 8 hours to visit and photograph themselves at various locations around the City and Conurbation of Nottingham, travelling using the superb tram and bus network, just like a live game of Monopoly. Points are awarded for each place visited, some places worth more than others. The team with the most points wins the prize package!

    Who: Each team will consist of 5 Explorer Scouts.

    When: Friday 10th - Sunday 12th July 2009

    July 2009: Volunteering - London Bikeathon

    London Bikeathon Volunteers 2009 for Leukaemia Research

    Who: Explorers and Network

    What: The London Bikeathon event need volunteers to work from 8:30am for as long as possible, and the event closes at 5pm (with lunch and refreshments included). For the marshal roles, we ensure that volunteers are placed in pairs and are conducted on a limited-shift basis..

    July 2009: Roverway '09

    Roverway '09 - ICELAND

    What: Roverway is an event offered by WOSM and WAGGGS Europe. The event is held every 3rd year, each time at a new location. This is your opportunity to head north in 2009 to experience something new, something different within our great movement and make friends from all over the world.

    Who: For Members of The Scout Association and Girl Guide UK from the age of 16 to 22 (born 1987-1993). Opportunities are available for members over the age of 22 as the International Service Team (IS team)

    July and August 2009: Tall Ships Race

    Derbyshire Tall Ships Race

    What: The Tall Ships Races are an annual event organised by Sail Training International for sail training boats from across the globe. Around 80 sailing vessels of all sizes and varieties enter each year; each crewed by a young crew aged 15-25

    When: Various Dates through July and August 2009

    Where: All over the place..... No prior sailing experience is necessary!

    August: Gold DofE Expedition

    Open Gold DofE Expedition

    What: ScoutsWales will be running an "open" gold expedition from its centre at Hafod in Snowdonia this summer. This will be open to any members of Scouting who wish to complete either a final assessed expedition or undertake complete expedition training including a final practice expedition.

    Who: The event is intended as an opportunity for individuals or small numbers who are unable to form their own team to undertake an expedition.

    What: Conservation week, tackling many diverse conservation projects from brush and pond clearance to path building, in the Great Epping Forrest

    Who: Open to ALL Explorers from across the globe

    September 2009: Theme Park Camp

    Theme Park Camp

    Who: 400 Explorers and Network

    What: Spend all Saturday at Thorpe Park, they've got some truly awesome rides these days, like Stealth, 0-80mph in TWO seconds! On both evenings there's discos, fancy dress, karaoke, giant party games, and all sorts of stuff!

    September 2009: AWESOME

    AWESOME

    Who: The weekend is open to all Explorer Scouts from across Wales and the rest of the UK.

    What: Utilising the fantastic location of Glanusk Park set in rolling Welsh countryside on the banks of the River Usk, AWESOME will offer true down and dirty outdoor activities. The type of activities that will be on offer are survival skills, rock climbing, zip wire, open fires - and as we're camped next to the Usk it'd be rude not to include canoeing and rafting!

    October 2009: Apex Extreme

    Apex Extreme

    Who: Explorer Scouts and Scout Network.

    What: The UK's most extreme Adventure Competition returns to the world-famous Ilkley Moor, for a weekend packed with challenges. At every event you can expect to find yourself rock climbing, canoeing, mountain biking and completing other tough challenges while racing against the clock to beat the other teams. Join the Adventure!

    October 2009: Challenge Events

    Challenge Events. Action Medical Research charity sailing fundraising event

    Who: This event is open to anyone over the age of 16. Yachts accommodate 6 people, you can enter as an individual or as a team.

    What: A weekend sailing challenge aboard a 40 foot yacht to raise money for national children's charity Action Medical Research. Saturday is spent learning the ropes with the help of an RYA instructor. On Sunday you take charge of the yacht (under your instructors supervision) and race around the Isle of Wight. If you complete the weekend challenge you will be eligible for the RYA Start Sailing certificate.

    November 2009: Operation Camp Cockerel

    Operation Camp Cockerel

    Who: Explorer Scouts

    What: Day activities which will include: climbing and abseiling, rifle shooting, archery, all terrain boards and many more bases Evening activities include an incident hike around Bewdley and Kidderminster.
