Programme - Explorer Scouts

The Programme Zones

There are six Programme Zones. Each has its own aims for the Explorer Scouts taking part in the activities for that Zone. You will find suggestions for activities for each of the Zones in:

  • The Unit Programme
  • The Unit Programme Plus
  • Programmes Online

Outdoor and Adventure

The aim of the Outdoor and Adventure Zone is to allow your Explorer Scouts to experience adventurous activities and unique opportunities they will not easily find elsewhere. The Outdoor and Adventure Zone includes activities at all levels, ranging from a walk in the park to climbing high mountains.

Skills

This Zone is about learning and developing practical and social skills and personal interests, taking responsibility, developing self-confidence and having fun.

Physical Recreation

It is important that Unit members have the opportunity to develop interests in specific physical pursuits either as individuals or as part of a team. They need to be able to protect their own health and accept their physical capabilities and attributes.

Community Service

The Community Service Zone is all about Explorer Scouts contributing something of themselves, their skills and their time, to help other people.

Global

The Global Zone introduces Explorer Scouts to different local and international issues. It aims to help Explorer Scouts develop a better understanding of the world they live in and make the link between local activity and global issues. The Global Zone also develops their understanding of other countries, their environment, people, customs, cultures and Scouting. The activities should also help young people understand their own local and national identities and develop their understanding of global issues. These activities should support young people in being active citizens within the international community.

Values and relationships

As young people mature, their values and the relationships they experience develop and help to shape their lives. Young people’s values define the way they treat other people and influence what other people think of them as individuals. This Zone helps Explorer Scouts to think about their values and by helping other people consider theirs which allows them greater understanding of how to form and develop relationships within their Unit and outside. It helps develop the shared values and for the relationships that form the basis of your local community and wider society.
