The Unit Essentials

The guide to the day to day running of an Explorer Scout Unit. It is designed as a handbook to help you with your role - whether your are an Explorer Scout Leader or Unit Assisant. It will tell you what you need to know about the Explorer Scout section and your role within it. You may decide to read it from cover to cover or dip in and out as required. Each chapter explains a key area of the role.

The Unit Essentials contains practical advice to help you run a really successful Explorer Scout Unit. It covers such things as:

  • Leadership teams
  • How the Unit is organised
  • An overview of the Balanced Programme

Who is The Unit Essentials for?

This is an essential guide for:

  • any new adult helping with an Explorer Scout Unit
  • experienced Leaders and adults looking for ideas and support
  • other adults with a supporting role in the Explorer Scout Section

How to use The Unit Essentials

The Unit Essentials is one of three adult resources for the Explorer Scout Unit. It has been organised so that you can dip in and out of it to find information, ideas and examples. As an adult working with an Explorer Scout Unit, you will also need:

  • The Unit Programme,
  • The Unit Programme Plus

This book has the following chapters:

1   Introduction

This chapter provides some basic information about Scouting and the Section, including; how it all began, how it developed, and where the Section fits in.

2   Programme

This chapter gives an overview of the Balanced Programme and how the activities, Badges and Awards all fit in. Also covered are the principles, purposes and the Promise and Law.

3   Leadership Team

Looks at the crucial issues that affect Unit Leadership, such as recruiting adults and organising the Leadership teams. Also covered are training, administration and good practices.

4   It's all about young people

Looks at young people in the Unit and covers issues such as Child Protection and Special Needs.

5   Everyday Adventure

Gives an overview of Scouting activities and adventures, it also covers how to deliver them safely and information about insurance.

6   Communication and Image

Why it is important to have a good image of Scouting in the wider community and details about communicating with the Unit and Leaders.

7   Administration

Information on a good administration system, either computer or paper based and how it should be efficient, accurate and fit for purpose.

8   Wider View

Looks at how Scouting fits in locally, nationally and internationally.

9   Appendix

Includes sample forms, contacts and a glossary.
