How can I continue Scouting whilst I am at University?

What is SSAGO?

SSAGO is the Student Scout and Guide Organisation, which is an associate organisation of The Scout Association and is affiliated to the Guide Association.

With the formation of Explorer Scouts and the Scout Network, the role of SSAGO in Scouting becomes increasingly important, as SSAGO can be an integral element of the Scout Network.

SSAGO has branches at many leading universities and is open to all students at any university or higher education college in the UK. With their network already established, SSAGO offers members of the Scout Network going to university a ready made opportunity to continue their Scouting.

What does SSAGO offer?

  • Currently based in nearly forty universities around the country.
  • It provides a central administrative framework for the independent university Scout and Guide clubs.
  • It offers assistance to all its members in continuing their Scouting and Guiding activities at all levels.

What does SSAGO do?

The wide range of activities offered varies between the individual clubs and is only limited by the imagination of members. All the activities are run within the ethos of Scouting and Guiding.

The activities can be classified into three broad categories; adventure, social and community. Adventurous SSAGO events have included Himalayan mountaineering, Cross-channel sailing, skiing trips and the Sun Run. SSAGO members are well known for their social skills having attended International Jamborees and the Mexico MOOT as well as silly hat making and the occasional jar of ale in their favourite inn. As well as helping the local Scout and Guide community, SSAGO clubs have completed environmental projects such as the building of a wildlife area at a local community school.

How can SSAGO help you?

SSAGO provides a link with The Scout Association, which allows older members to retain their connection with the Movement. This SSAGO continuity often results in members remaining involved in Scouting upon completion of their university studies.

SSAGO can provide a large diverse pool of resources, which are readily available to the local Scouting community. Many of its members have Mountain & Water qualifications, Caving and Climbing awards.

To find out if there is a SSAGO club at your University, or advice on how to set one up, look at the SSAGO website on www.ssago.org.uk or contact the Scout Information Centre.
