The Programme Zones

From Monday 16th November 2009, as part of The Scout Association's development of one fully integrated website for Members, the information contained on this page is no longer being maintained. For up to date information please visit the following link:Scout Network: The Balanced Programme

There are eight Programme Zones within the Scout Network. You will find suggestions for activities using a wide range of different methods in Network essentials.

Outdoors

The Outdoors Programme Zone gives you the chance to experience the outdoors, and enjoy both urban landscapes and the countryside.

Skills

The Skills Programme Zone is about developing practical and personal interests, taking responsibility, developing self-confidence and having fun.

Physical recreation

It is important to make sure that the Scout Network members have the opportunity to develop interests in physical pursuits either as individuals or as part of a team. They need to be able to improve and protect their own health as well as accepting their physical capabilities and attributes.

Community Service

The Community Service Programme Zone is all about contributing something of your skills and time to help individuals or the community outside your immediate circle of family and friends. Community Service works best and is most rewarding when it benefits both the Member and the community.

It is important to recognise that not all your colleagues in the Scout Network will have either the skills or desire to get involved in long-term or especially challenging community projects. Group projects can be very helpful here, and have the added benefit of providing an opportunity for group discussion of the shared experience. Community Service can be either a group or an individual project, depending on the interests of your Unit and the needs of the community.

Environment

The Environment Programme Zone introduces different environmental issues, encourages thought and discussion and shows how you can help shape a better future. It aims to help you develop a better understanding of the environment, and to help you see how local activities help to solve global problems.

International

The Interntional Programme Zone gives you the chance to find out about other countries and cultures, and about Scouting around the world.

Relationships

The Relationships Programme Zone is about learning to live and work with other people. The Zone is not just about developing and working in relationships in your Network, but about providing skills and attitudes needed to work with many different people now and in the future, many of whom may not be your friends. It is not just about team building, but about challenging perceptions and stereotypes.

Values

Values are things that you believe in, and which help define the way you live your life. We all have values. Some values are imposed on us by society, the law of our local community. Some may be personal values that are individual to you or values that you share with others, for example, in your Scout Network. Values may be stated in formal religious or other spiritual terms, moral terms or as personal or shared beliefs.
