Scouting essentials

The file for adults in Scouting

Maybe you are new to Scouting or perhaps you have just decided to update your resources. Whatever the case, we hope that you find Scouting essentials helpful.

Who is Scouting essentials for?

Scouting essentials is aimed at all adults working in Scouting. The topics covered here apply equally to those working in each of the five Sections.

How to use Scouting essentials

You do not need to read the file from beginning to end like a novel. Try using it more like a reference book. The dividers and colour coding will make it easy to find the information you need.

Once you have added your Essentials and Programme supplements to this file, you will have everything you need to help you deliver excellent Scouting.

You can also add your own training handouts and other resources to make your file a living and practical tool.

Contents

This file has the following chapters:

1   The what, why and how of Scouting

Scouting is much more than an activity club for young people. This chapter talks about what Scouting is, why we need it, and how we go about delivering it.

2   The Programme

The Scout Association has a continuous training Programme. Its aim is to promote the growth and development of young people. This chapter outlines The Programme.

3   The structure of Scouting

This chapter outlines the structure of The Scout Association, within its four levels: Group, District, County/Area and UK Headquarters.

4   The welfare of young people and adults in Scouting

Parents, carers and the wider community trust us to take care of the younge people in our charge. We have a moral and legal duty to put this above everything else.

This chapter looks at some of the specific responsibilities that we have. In your formal training as an adult, you will explore the issues raised here in greater detail.

5   The support available for adults

As an adult in Scouting, you are entitled to support to help you do your job. Your local District and County/Area will provide training and support for you so that you can gain fresh ideas and skills to provide the quality programme your young people expect. Also parents and carers of our young people expect us as Leaders to have adequate skills and knowledge to run safe and exciting programmes.

6   Inside Scouting

Scouting should be a valuable experience for adults and young people. This chapter looks at some stratergies and issues to help you make sure this happens.

It also looks at some of the issues facing Scouting today and how Scouting can embrace other organisations that are interested in the development of young people.

7   How to maintain and increase your Membership

Scouting helps young people to get the most out of life. As adults in Scouting, we have a duty to try and reach as many young people as we can. We need to actively try to overcome some of the obstacles that block the growth of Scout Groups. This chapter offers some advice on increasing your Membership.

8   The essentials of administration

It is impossible to manage a busy Section without good administration. Some people adopt a computer-based approach. Others will rely on keeping paper-based records. It doesn't matter whihc you choose so long as it's accurate.

Keeping accurate records ensures that you keep on top of the day-to-day running of your Section. Imagine not knowing where your Members lived, who had paid you for which event or what medical problems your Members have? This chapter will provide you with essestial advice on what records to keep and how to keep them.
