Coffee Bean Game - A Game for Scouts and Explorer Scouts

Scouts; Explorer Scouts; World Trade

Aim:

To raise awareness of social and economic impact of crops in South America, and encourage Scouts to become 'ethical consumers'.

Preparation:

A bag of coffee beans, a dice, score card (one card each) and play money.

Method:

Part One:

One person runs the game - the controller. The other players (growers) throw the dice; the number they throw x 10 is the amount of coffee beans they receive. The controller must not know how many beans are given out.

The dice is then thrown to see who goes first, the higher tries to sell his beans by bartering with the controller. All transactions should be secret. The controller has 1000 pesos per grower with which to trade. Bartering continues until the controller has 30 beans multiplied by the number of growers (or until all beans are sold if less than 30).

The controller now has beans and the growers have money. Write the amount of money in the Harvest line. The one with the most money is a winner. All grower's money and beans are now removed from the game.

Part Two:

The new price of the beans if set by: Money spent by controller) multiplied by 10 minus (beans sold).

The growers now become the exporters.

The exporters' costs are worked out by rolling the dice and multiplying by 100 pesos. Fill in the score sheet for the cots and write the total costs in the total cost line. The exporters' money is calculated by rolling the dice three times and multiplying the total by 1000 pesos. The money is left work with the exporters' money minus exporters' costs.

Rolling the dice as in PART ONE, the exporters barter in secret with the controller, trying to get the best price possible. If the controller makes more per bean than the new price, the controller wins this part of the game. If not the exporter who gets the most beans wins.

Part Three:

Every player including the controller rolls the dice. Odd throwers are trying to get money and even throwers are trying to get beans (if all odds or all evens are thrown, rethrow). The coffee stock market is then announced open and the players have two minutes to try and get either as much money or as many beans as possible. Write the totals on the score sheet to find the winner each bean is worth 125 pesos.

Part Four:

The people with beans are now the sellers and the people without are the shops. The shop price for the beans is set by throwing the dice and multiplying by 1000. Only the shops know the shop price. Shops want to buy from the sellers for a profit. Transactions are still secret but can be between anyone. The sellers want to make a profit from selling their beans. The winning shop is the one whose profit is highest (money left plus beans at shop price). The winning seller is the one with most money.
