"Getting to know you charades" - an activity for older sections

Scouts; Explorer Scouts; Scout Network; Peace and Tolerance

Aim:

To look at how we view people from cultures different to our own.

Preparation

Prepare cards with different countries written on them - make sure that there is at least one country from every continent.

Method

The Troop/Unit should divide into two teams and take it in turns to mine the country on the card to the rest of the team - they win 2 points if they guess the country in 1 minute and 1 point if they guess in 2 minutes. Play until everyone has mimed a country.

Discuss how they portrayed people from the countries.

Mime a football hooligan or a lager lout as a portrayal of a 'British person'.

Discuss how this made them feel, and how important it is to understand other cultures and not to rely on stereotypes.
