Lost for Words - an activity for Scouts and older

Scouts; Explorer Scouts; Scout Network; Peace and Tolerance

Aim:

To look at how we can communicate with people who don't speak the same language as us.

Preparation and Method

Only 7% communication is verbal (words only). 38% is in tone of voice and 55% is in body language.

Divide the unit into pairs and explain that they are not allowed to use any recognisable words. Then ask the pairs to hold a 'conversation' with each other using made up works on a particular subject or in a particular situation. For example, they could be:

  • In a job interview.
  • Asking a member of their family for a loan.
  • Asking someone out.
  • Discussing what they watched on TV the night before.
