How many fundraising events towards Group Funds do you hold per year?
51% of Groups that responded hold between 3-5 fundraising events each year towards their Group Funds and over 6% hold more than 10 fundraising events per year towards their Group Funds.
What are the main activities that you do for these events?
Traditional fundraising events such as Jumble Sales, Bag Packing and Quiz nights are still the most popular forms of fundraising with 31% of respondents saying they hold Jumble Sales every year. However, other forms of fundraising are also prevalent. 30% of respondents have either written a Charitable Trust application or held a sponsored event such as a sponsored cycle or walk.
What does the biggest proportion of money go towards?
71% of the respondents said that the money they raised goes towards the running costs of their Group or Scout Hut/Building. 41% said that it goes towards the repair/refurbishment of their Scout Hut/Building.
Do you see your fundraising efforts increasing over the next 12 months?
Over a third of Groups recognised the importance of fundraising as a means of income generation and believed their efforts would be increasing over the next year. The majority of Groups feel that their efforts would remain the same. This indicates that new fundraising ideas are needed to either sustain or increase the amount raised by the groups.
Is there anything in particular we could do to help you with your fundraising efforts?
The respondents gave lots of varied answers for this question, but particular areas that reoccurred throughout include:
- New Ideas
- Info Packs i.e. Factsheets/advice leaflets to give to parents explaining fundraising
- Template Flyers/Posters/Banners - publicity material for events
- Draft letters for applying to charitable trusts/for sponsorship/grants
- List of grant giving bodies to approach
- Share success stories
- Help motivate parents to get them involved
- Reduce HQ capitation fees
Other interesting points/suggestions:
- Most Charitable Trusts don't cover building repairs
- Ideas that can apply to small groups
- Keep Scouting as a high profile hobby in the National Press/TV/Newspapers
- What happened to Job Week?
- Give us plenty of lead-time for new ideas as it takes time to set them up.
- The research that has been gathered will help us in out pursuit to enhance the advice and service we give our members.
Do you ask companies to sponsor your events/activities to generate funds?
Almost 40% of Groups said yes to this meaning they access their local community for support. That still leaves 60% that do not tap in local resources to raise funds. This is a very important area for groups to move into in terms of fundraising and we will be looking at ways to make it easier for Groups to approach local corporate organisations.
The National Fundraising Survey not only provided us with some very useful information, but also was great news for Peeks. 75% of the respondents requested one or more of their catalogues. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Peeks for their assistance with this project.
We would also like to thank all those who responded to the Survey. The information we have gathered is invaluable to us in understanding how best we can help you! Check the sponsorship and fundraising pages regularly for new ideas and initiatives.
