The Cub Scout Badge

The Bronze Arrow

Health
  1. Know how and why you should keep your teeth, hands and nails clean.
  2. Know how to breathe correctly and prevent the spreading of colds.
  3. Show what to do for a small graze and understand the importance of summoning adult help in cases of accident.
Feats of skill
  1. Throw a ball in twos and catch it 8 times out of 10 over a distance of at least 5 metres (16ft).
  2. Perform two of the following:
    1. Forward Roll,
    2. Leap Frog,
    3. Climb at least 3 metres (10ft) up a tree or rope.
Exploring
Know where the essential services are in your neighbourhood. Such as: fire station, telephone, bus stops, railway station, post office, doctor, time of collection of last post, nearest taxi service and how to summon help from the police or fire brigade.
Discovering nature
You can choose any animal, tree, fish or bird you have seen; discover all you can about it.
Safety
  1. Understand the causes of accidents at home and the danger of fire.
  2. Take an older person for a walk and demonstrate that you know the Rules for Road Users on foot. (Highway Code, paragraphs 1-21.)
Handcraft
Make a simple model or article from odds and ends.
Out-of-doors
Follow a trail of tracking signs.
Entertaining
Act a simple mime alone or with another Cub Scout
Knotting
  1. Tie a reef knot and know its uses.
  2. Hank a short rope.
Promise
Do your best to live up to your promise.

The Silver Arrow

Health
  1. Know why it is important to keep the feet in good condition.
  2. Know the importance of having a good night's sleep.
  3. Show what to do in the case of a nose bleed.
  4. Know the importance of summoning adult help in cases of accident.
Feats of skill
Either
  1. Swim 10 metres
Or
  1. Show that you have confidence in water by carrying out the following:
    Be able to walk backwards and forwards through water,
    Be able to put your face underwater,
    Be able to hold on to the bar and kick your feet up,
    Be able to get into and out of the pool without using steps.
Over a period of three months achieve, by means of regular practice, an improvement in your performance of three of the following activities:
Skip 15 times forward and 15 times backwards, turning the rope yourself.
Balance along an edge such as a beam or brick wall not more than 13cm (5in) wide for a distance of at least 4.5 metres (15ft).
Forward circle over a bar at least waist high.
Climb a ladder and step ladder and know how to make sure that they are in a safe position.
Dribble a football out of doors, as quickly as you can around at least six obstacles over a distance of not more than 18 metres (20yds).
If your Pack cannot get to the swimming baths for the first part of (b), then Akela will ask you to do four of the other tests.
Exploring
Visit a place of local interest and report on what you find out about it.
Discovering nature
  1. Grow something such as cress or any other quick growing seed.
  2. Know the type of foods to give birds in winter.
Safety
Know the water safety rules.
Service
  1. Be able to use a public telephone, a directory and a code book correctly.
  2. Know how to make an emergency call and how to find the nearest available telephone.
  3. Carry a message containing dates, figures and names.
Flags and countries
  1. Tell the stories of the Patron Saints of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and know their special days, emblems and saints.
  2. Know the composition of the Union Flag.
Handcraft
Either
  1. Make a model, using Balsa wood, polystyrene or other materials.
Or
  1. Assemble a construction kit and finish it to a good standard.
Out-of-doors
  1. Light a fire and cook sausages on it.
  2. Know how to put out the fire and leave the site clean and tidy.
Entertaining
Do one of the following by yourself or with another Cub Scout: Perform a trick (scientific or conjuring); Tell a story or recite a poem; Sing a song; Play an instrument; Perform a series of tumbling tricks.
Knotting
  1. Tie a round turn and two half hitches and a sheet bend and demonstrate their use.
  2. Make sure you can still do your Bronze Arrow knots.
Promise
Show that you have tried to live up to your Promise since you gained the Bronze Arrow.

The Gold Arrow

Health
  1. Know the importance of summoning adult help in cases of accident.
  2. Make a first aid kit for your own use and take it with you on Pack and/or family expeditions and outings.
  3. Know how to treat insect bites and stings.
  4. Know the simple treatment of small burns and scalds.
Feats of skill
Either
  1. Swim 25 metres using any stroke.
    Tread water or float.
    Jump in from the side of the swimming bath.
Or
  1. Show that you have confidence in the water by carrying out the following:
    Be able to walk backwards and forwards through water,
    Be able to put your face underwater,
    Be able to hold on to the bar and kick your feet up,
    Be able to get into and out of the pool without using steps.
Over a period of at least three months achieve, by means of regular practice, an improvement in three of the following:
50 metres sprint.
Running or standing long jump.
Ball throwing over a distance.
Vault (side vault) a fence or obstacle no more than waist high.
If your Pack cannot get to the swimming baths for the first part of (b), then Akela will ask you to do four of the other tests.
Exploring
  1. Understand the 24-hour clock.
  2. Plan a Pack or Six outing with Akela including travel and cost.
Discovering nature
Show an interest in, and understanding of, some aspect of nature through a log or collection, e.g. weather-lore, seashore, insects, the sky at night, pondlife etc.
Safety
  1. Know the Country Code.
  2. By your example, give a lead in Road Safety to younger Cub Scouts.
  3. Explain what should be done when leaving a house unoccupied.
Service
With Akela's help, plan and carry out a definite service to others, either with other Cubs or by yourself.
Flags and countries
  1. Help to prepare the flag for breaking and know which way to fly it.
  2. Find out about the flag of another country and International Scouting.
Handcraft
  1. Make something out of wood metal or other materials, using the appropriate tools.
  2. Know how to take care of tools.
Out-of-doors
  1. Know 8 points of the compass.
  2. Be able to find your way over a course of at least a 400 metres (quarter of a mile) using a compass.
Entertaining
Choose one of the following:
Organise and perform a play with other Cubs.
Organise the performance of a song or dance with musical or percussion accompaniment.
Make puppets and give a short play with other Cubs.
Knotting
  1. Tie a bowline and demonstrate its use, round yourself, round another person, a free loop.
  2. Hank a long rope.
  3. Make sure you can still do the Bronze and Silver Arrow knots.
Promise
Renew your Promise. Show that you understand it more fully than before and that you are making a real effort to live up to it at all times.

The Link Badge

Be at least 10½ years old.

  1. Visit your Scout Leader and put your name down for entry into the Troop about three months before going-up.
  2. Take part in a Patrol activity out-of-doors.
  3. Show a general knowledge of the Scout Movement and of how world-wide Scouting developed.
  4. Know the Scout Law and its meaning.
  5. Know the Scout Promise and its meaning.

Cub Scout Proficiency Badges

After you are invested: you can pass the Swimmer and Cyclist, and any two others.

After Bronze Arrow: you can pass any two badges.

After Silver Arrow: you can pass any two badges.

After Gold Arrow: you can pass any badges you wish.
