Explorer Scout Activity Badges: Recreation (old requirements)

Please note this pages is the old requirements for this badge. This badge is being discontinued as of October 2006 but these requirements are still valid until December 2007.

To gain this badge the Explorer Scout must complete all the requirements in one of the following alternatives.

Alternative A - Equestrian

  1. Hold the Pony Club 'C+' standard.

  2. Demonstrate skills in a horse-riding activity to a group of young people to encourage them to try the activity. This should be appropriately supervised.

  3. Discuss the safety rules of their chosen activity.

  4. Take part in at least two competitions or demonstrations, and discuss their performance and how to improve with the examiner or instructor.

Alternative B - Martial Arts

  1. Demonstrate an improved level of skill in a Martial Art activity recognised by the Sports Council. This should involve regular participation for at least 50 hours.

  2. Demonstrate skills in their chosen activity to a group of young people to encourage them to try the activity. This should be appropriately supervised.

  3. Discuss the safety rules of their chosen activity and how to use the skills learned in a responsible manner with the examiner or instructor.

  4. Take part in at least two competitions or demonstrations. Discuss their performance and how they can improve with the examiner or instructor.

Alternative C - Master at Arms

  1. Demonstrate an improved level of skill in an activity such as fencing, shooting or archery. This should involve regular participation for at least 50 hours.

  2. Demonstrate skills in their chosen activity to a group of young people to encourage them to try the activity. This should be appropriately supervised.

  3. Discuss the safety rules of their chosen activity and how to use the skills learned in a responsible manner with the examiner or instructor.

  4. Take part in at least two competitions or demonstrations. Discuss their performance and how they can improve with the examiner or instructor.

Alternative D - Angler

  1. Demonstrate an improved level of skill in inland, beach or sea angling. This should involve regular participation for at least 50 hours.

  2. Demonstrate skills in their chosen activity to a group of young people to encourage them to try the activity. This should be appropriately supervised.

  3. Discuss the safety rules of your chosen activity and how to fish in a responsible manner with the examiner or instructor.

  4. Take part in at least two competitions or demonstrations. Discuss their performance and how they can improve with the examiner or instructor.

Alternative E - Skater

  1. Demonstrate an improved level of skill in a skating activity such as in-line skating, ice skating or skateboarding. This should involve regular participation for at least 50 hours.

  2. Demonstrate skills in their chosen activity to a group of young people to encourage them to try the activity. This should be appropriately supervised.

  3. Discuss the safety rules of their chosen activity and how to use the skills learned in a responsible manner with the examiner or instructor.

  4. Take part in at least two competitions or demonstrations. Discuss their performance and how they can improve with the examiner or instructor.

Alternative F - Physical Recreation

This requirement should be used for activities for which there is no Explorer Scout Activity Badge.

  1. Demonstrate an improved level of skill in a physical activity not covered for elsewhere in this badge. This should involve regular participation for at least 50 hours.

  2. Demonstrate skills in their chosen activity to a group of young people to encourage them to try the activity. This should be appropriately supervised.

  3. Discuss any safety rules of their chosen activity and how to abide by the rules or laws of the activity with the examiner or instructor.

  4. Take part in at least two competitions or demonstrations. Discuss their performance and how they can improve with the examiner or instructor.
