28th October 2003
Ten lucky Scouts from 1st Kilworth Scout Troop, Husbands Bosworth and 1st Broughton Astley, both in Leicester, spent the last day of their half-term holiday learning the tricks of the photography trade.
Jessops, the UK's leading photographic retailer, is the proud sponsor of the Scout Photographer Badge, one of 70 activity badges Scouts can choose to participate in. As a way to launch its sponsorship of the badge, as well as the 12-page resource it has produced to help the Scouts to obtain the badge, Jessops offered the 100,000 Scouts throughout the UK the chance to complete the badge with a professional photographer.
The fun and informative day took place in Leicester with the Director of Jessops School of Photography, Bob Moore. A professional photographer and lecturer for over 30 years, Bob has won over 200 awards in national and international competitions and was thrilled to help ten young people learn about the exciting world of photography.
The Scouts covered the basic functions of a camera, accessories and how to use them before discovering composition, exposure and depth of field, film types, how to produce prints and common photographic mistakes. Their knowledge was then put to the test with a trip to the local park to take photos for their portfolio.
The day was wound up by Bob Moore offering each Scout feedback on their photos. The Scouts were then told that they had all passed the badge with flying colours by one of the Scout Leaders, Ingrid Jackson, and were awarded their badge and Jessops certificate.
One of the Scouts said "This has been such a cool day out with my friends. We have learnt so much about photography but in a fun way and I can't wait to go out and practise some more."
Chief Executive of The Scout Association, Derek Twine, said: "Scouts today want up-to-date activities that are fun and practical. Jessops' sponsorship of our Photographer Badge helps to ensure that our Scouts are helped with their skills for recording expeditions, developing creative and artistic projects, designing publicity and using modern technology."
