Press release from Chelmsford Borough Council 29 June, 1999.
CHELMSFORD`S SUPPORT FOR WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE
Chelmsford Borough Council`s commitment to hosting the World ScoutJamboree in the year 2007 will be underline with the signing of an "Accord" on June 30.
Representatives from the Council and The Scout Association will sign the joint Accord at Hylands House - Hylands Park is being recommended as the preferred location for the Jamboree in the centenary year of the Scout Movement.
The Scout Association looked at a large number of sites with consultants Ove Arup before settling on Hylands Park as its preferred side for the multi-million pound international event, held only once every four years.
The last time the Jamboree was held in England was in 1957 at Sutton Coldfield.
Last year The Scout Association gave a presentation of its proposals to the Council outlining what happens at a World Jamboree, and the infrastructure, services, transportation and benefits to tourism and business.
The Jamboree would involve up to 40,000 Scouts aged 14 to 18 from around the world camping and 15,000 visitors a day. The Jamboree is larger than the Olympic Games with more people taking part from more countries, for longer.
Council Officers are now working with The Scout Association to help prepare a bid to the World Scout Conference in Durban, South Africa, in July and the Accord is part of this.
