Ensure that appropriate training is available. Remember that a development project is more than an isolated expedition. Care needs to be taken to ensure participants are sensitive to cultural and environmental differences. All UKSA development projects must abide by the Marrakech Charter.

The Young Explorers Trust runs leadership courses for major expeditions.

The Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council has an ideas pack for developing international awareness and a board game to highlight many aspects of an international exchange.

Check the GAPP website for activities developed to increase global awareness.

The North-South Network of the European Region has meetings twice a year for the exchange of information on projects which are operated by Scouts and Guides from the European Region. The Department for International Development may be interested in supporting the project financially, though extreme care is required to ensure that the project is not merely seen as funding UK young people to do work which could be done better by locals.

Funding possibilities may be available through the National Lottery - International Fund and the European Union - EuropeAid Co-operation Office though both these options require specialist advice and research.
