Programme Support - International

Global Explorer

What is Global Explorer?

Each year many thousands of Scouts participate in international camps organised at local level. Some camps have a high proportion of international participation. However, some only attract a small number of overseas participants, which makes it more difficult to justify calling the camps international particularly if there are few international activities in the programme.

Since the early 1990s, Global Development Villages have become a key feature of world events and, increasingly, their potential has been used by UK international camps. Scouts from the UK, as well as those visiting from other countries, have expectations of what an international camp should include, not least that there should be the opportunity to mix with Scouts from other countries and to experience aspects of life from another country.

Global Explorer builds on current good practice and seeks to extend it to a wider circle. It is a quality incentive for event organisers and a support for marketing: Global Explorer is a system of recognising good international programming which "kite marks" events which are prepared to promote, prepare for and implement this important aspect of Scouting.

Events prepared to sign-up for the scheme will have their event endorsed as providing programme opportunities to be "Global Explorers".

There is a special symbol to use on printed material and web sites:

What does it involve?

Event organisers:

  • Include information on the Global Explorer scheme in pre-event support material
  • Encourage the linking of groups prior to the event
  • Provide a venue as the focus for freetime activities which focus on international and global issues
  • Include global activities in the main programme of the event
  • Provide promotional material to support the scheme – record card etc
  • Administer a scheme to enable youth participants to receive recognition of their achievement in the international and global issues programme – badge, pin or certificate, using wherever possible the Global Explorer symbol
  • Evaluate the operation of the scheme in conjunction with the International Office and Team

The International Team/Office:

  • Endorse the event with special mention of the scheme in any material published and distributed, both in the UK and worldwide
  • Provide a hypertext link from event promotional material to this page on ScoutBase
  • Provide basic graphics to enable materials (print, badges etc) to be produced locally
  • Facilitate an annual evaluation of the scheme
  • Implement new ideas to enhance the scheme so as to provide an expanding bank of ideas for event organisers. The suggested activities will be suitable for before the event as well as during and after; they will provide for team and project based activities as well as individual ones
