How do I... manage challenging behaviour?

We have all had occasions when behaviour has affected the smooth running of an event or activity. Behaviour that exceeds high spirits or general naughtiness. It spoils the activity for everyone, and it can lead to accidents, damage or distress. On this page you will find a range of resources and sources of further information that will help you tackle challenging behaviour.

On this page you will find information about:

Factsheets

There are two general factsheets that look at managing challenging behaviour:

  • FS185090 - Managing Behaviour

This factsheet looks at some of the causes of behavioural problems, and gives some suggestions about how you can deal with them.

  • FS315066 - Promoting Good Behaviour in the Scout Troop

This Factsheet looks at how to promote good behaviour using the structure of the Scout Troop, and involving everyone from the Scouts and Patrol Leaders and Parents in the process.

Some behaviour problems relate to specific learning or behaviour difficulties, which require support for the member concerned. There are factsheets that give more detailed information about some of these:

  • FS250008 - The Scout with General Learning Difficulties

A description of learning difficulties and what the Scouter needs to know

  • FS250012 - Dyslexia

A description of Dyslexia and what the Scouter needs to know

  • FS250016 - Clumsiness

A description of cluminess and what the Scouter needs to know

  • FS250025 - Autism and Asperger Syndrome

A description of Autism and Asperger Syndrome and what the Scouter needs to know

  • FS250032 - Dyspraxia

A description of Dyspraxia and what the Scouter needs to know

  • FS250035 - Literacy and Scouting

A description of literacy difficulties and what the Scouter needs to know

  • FS250037 - Hyperactivity

A description of Hyperactivity and what the Scouter needs to know

  • FS250050 - Learning Disabilities - An Overview

    Information on Learning Disabilities

  • FS322100 - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD or ADD)

A description of ADHD and what the Scouter needs to know

These factsheets are part of a range of factsheets that cover many of the specific needs that you are likely to encounter in Scouting. The full list of special needs factsheets is on the Resources section of these web pages: http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/ps/sneeds/resources/

Training

Module 15: Challenging Behaviour, part of the Adult training scheme, looks at the types and causes of behaviour difficulties and methods of overcoming challenging behaviour.

Other training modules that you might find useful are:

Module 7: Valuing Diversity, which is an introduction into equal opportunities and gives practical help to create a programme that is suitable for all.

Module 36: Special Needs provides skills and knowledge for those who support special needs in Scouting such as ACC and ADC Special Needs and adults who work regularly with disabled young people.

There is more information about The Scout Association adult training scheme on our adult support pages: http://www.scoutbase.org.uk/support/training/

Practical Help

Small Steps

There are many occasions when you want to record the progress of a young person either in their activities, development or behaviour. Deann Weeks, District Commissioner for Wareham and the Isle of Purbeck has put together a very useful package of templates and ideas that may help you to do this.

Other Ideas

If you would like to share your ideas on ways to tackle challenging behaviour during Scout activities, please contact the Special Needs Team at Gilwell Park: special.needs@scout.org.uk

Bullying

Many young people will experience bullying at some point. It is Scout policy that bullying in any form is unacceptable and all activities should have in place rigorous anti-bullying strategies. We have produced a new guide to help you deal with bullying and reduce the chance of it happening in your Section or Group, Would you recognise the signs of bullying? - Anti-Bullying Guide.

The guide, along with many other resources, is available to download from our anti-bullying pages:
