Tuesday 7th June, Plas y Brenin, 10am - 5pm.   •   Price - £10 per delegate (non residential)

A one day conference hosted by Plas y Brenin, the BMC and MLTUK with contributions from the Scout Association and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.
Are you responsible for outdoor activities delivered by volunteers? • Do you run a climbing wall, a mountaineering club or a community programme?

What Can Volunteers Do? How Can The BMC Help? Do They Need To Be Qualified?
Indoor Climbing at Plas y Brenin The conference will be aimed at helping us find out precisely where we stand, both legally and morally, as volunteers. We’ll be discussing what changes can be made to improve safety management without compromising the ‘adventure experience’.
Of course, the burning issue of whether or not volunteers should be required to reach a nationally recognised level of qualification will be analysed in depth along with what contribution the governing bodies can make. We will also look at how appropriate current training schemes are.

How Can We Support Clubs?  •  Where Are The Gaps?  •  What Problems Do Voluntary Organisations Face?
Hillwalking and map reading skills at Plas y BreninThe conference will also provide an opportunity for the MLTUK to reveal the new ‘National Guidelines’ which advise on good practice for anyone with a responsibility for mountain related activities and there will be an official launch of the Mountain Leader Training Association (MLTA) which provides a useful platform for Mountain Leaders, both professional and voluntary, to share knowledge and expertise to help maintain high standards in outdoor leadership. Also the BMC will be unveiling the new Club Guidance Notes, aimed to help formalise, rationalise and strengthen the UK’s club system.
