DEVELOPMENT POINTS
March 2004

Welcome to our 3rd edition of Development Points . the newsletter that celebrates some of the successes around the Country in growing Scouting!

Contents

Rhondda Valley

  • The District Commissioner of Rhondda Scout District called to tell us about the re-opening of a Scout Group in the Rhondda Valley that had been closed for a number of years. With visits to local schools and other local publicity, three Open evenings were being planned to recruit young people for a new Beaver Colony and Cub Pack!

Cambridgeshire

  • In the Crafts Hill District in Cambridgeshire, a new Scout Group is opening in the village of Papworth Everard. It has been ten years since Scouting was in the village and it is hoped that as the village grows, not only will it be able to support Beavers and Cubs, but a Scout Troop will also be opened. On the first open evening, 15 parents volunteered to help!

Belfast

  • In Belfast, Northern Ireland, five Community Action projects are being developed involving up to 100 young people. The joint projects are being organised with various community and youth groups at various location around the city.

Kent

  • In Kent, the Development Team have just completed drafting a Handbook for Group Scout Leaders .providing local support to enable GSL.s to understand their role and provide easy at hand advice.

  • The County Scout Mate project, which is aimed at recruiting more young people into Scouting is proving a big success, with many enquiries from other parts of the Country. One Group had a phone call from one of their Cubs at the beginning of January to ask if he could bring along 10 of his friends from school to join his local Pack.

Coventry

  • In Coventry, the local Muslim Community have been in talks with the County about opening an Explorer Scout Unit for young Muslim people in the area. Although discussions are at an early stage, it is hoped that once one Unit is open, the model can be used in other parts of the city.

Leicestershire

  • In Leicestershire, a new Cub Pack has opened in Woodhouse Eaves.

  • Connexions U-project agreed funding for .Leicestershire Live. development camp in August (based on the very successful Essex Experience)

Bath

  • In Bath, they have an appointment of ADC (Group Support). The new postholder is involved in helping directly with the guidance and training of new leaders, showing them some of the very basic things we all take for granted. Also in Bath, they are experimenting with sharing GSL.s . where a Group with a GSL will provide support to a neighbouring section, as if it were part of its own Group.

Stoke

  • Project Heron Cross, in Stoke, has just received funding from the Community Chest to employ a part-time worker to facilitate the regeneration of the 116th Scout Group (Heron Cross) to enable it to play a greater role in the regeneration of the local community.
