DEVELOPMENT POINTS
June 2004

News from Vivienne James, LDO Glamorgan West

Since the start of my employment in August 2003 as a new Development Officer we have achieved the following:

  • Coed Hirwaun (Afan Nedd District) opening of a new Beaver Colony, with four warranted leaders and three committee members recruited.

  • Bishopston (Gower District) opening of a new Beaver Colony with four warranted leaders.

  • Townhill (Swansea District) opening of a new Beaver Colony with four warranted leaders.

  • Work for April at present is being done on hopefully opening a new Cub Pack in Townhill, gaining committee members in Gowerton, building up an exsiting Cub Pack in Neath and a Scout Troop in Clydarch.

Any helpful points that anyone can give with the latter would be useful!

Colchester Group re-opens

The 1st Eight Ash Green Scout Group has opened the doors again after closing its doors for 18 months due to a lack of Leaders. Cub Scout Leader Tony Chilver and Assistant Leader Marion Morris invited more than 200 children, parents and local dignitaries to the launch of 1st Eight Ash Green Cub Pack. Children from two surrounding villages practised circus skills, rope-making, balloon modelling and other crafts as a taster of some of today's Scouting activities.

Judging by the turnout, it won't be long before the Cub Scouts will be joined by Beavers Scouts and Scouts. Tony and Marion would like to express their thanks to all the other members of Colchester West District, who have welcomed them so enthusiastically.

Good News Stories from Norfolk

Following Norfolk Scouts Council Development Project preparation work and with the support of the County Development Team and Youth Programme Team, on 22 April we opened the doors of a new scout group in Swaffham. On 20th May, assisted by the National Commissioner Beaver Scouts plus the ACCs from each section Swaffham Scout Group invested 16 Beaver Scouts, 14 Cub Scouts and 6 Scouts as the first youth members and we currently have 3 adults undergoing CRB/AA process for leadership roles plus 3 others for appointed helper roles.

Following on from our pleasing 3.3% growth at census Norfolk Scouts have in the period 01 Feb to 30th April.

  • opened a Beaver Scout colony and grown the other sections the 1st North East Norfolk Rural Group.

  • opened a Beaver Scout colony, grown the other sections and recruited adults to 25th Norwich Scout Group.

  • grown all sections and the adult team of the Earlham Scout Group

  • reopened a 'dormant' Scout Group with Cubs and Scouts at Blakeney.

Total 106 new youth members plus 7 adults undergoing CRB/AA process.

The King George VI Memorial Leadership Fund

The Development Grants Board, whose remit is to support local development projects, has had its remit extended to include the administration of the King George VI Memorial Leadership Fund. The essence of the scheme for this Fund is the 'Expansion of Leadership Training'. This must guide all who administer the money available to Scouting through the Fund. Applications for this fund must be with the Secretary by 7th September, earlier than previously, in order that all applications can be discussed at the November meeting of the Development Grants Board.
