The Adult Training Steering Group as the name suggests, steers all training initiatives, both current and future. The Group manages three areas, the support, maintenence and development of the Adult Training Scheme in The Scout Association.

Meet the team:

Donna Kerrigan is the UK Adviser for Adult Training and is responsible for the managing the work of the Adult Training Steering Group

Donna has held an adult appointment in The Scout Association since 1978 when she became a Cub Scout Leader in Salisbury, Wiltshire. She continued in the cub scout section when she moved to Hampshire. In 1987 she became an ADC Leader training and she joined HampshireÂ’s training team in 1997. She also had two spells as a District Commissioner and became an Assistant County Training Manager in 2001. She has also been a child protection coordinator in Hampshire for some years. Her first HQ appointment was as Chair of the National Moderation Panel in 2004, where she set up and managed the team of Regional Training Advisers. In 2007 she became UK Adviser for Adult Training.

Donna’s professional background is in education. After 26 years in the teaching profession she became an education adviser in a local authority. She is currently a Regional Adviser for the National Strategies.

Margaret Medler sits on the Adult Training Steering Group as a Project Co-ordinator. She co-ordinates a number of projects commissioned by the Adult Training Steering Group working with Project Leaders and Project Workers to ensure projects are completed

Margaret started working with young people as a Guide Leader in Essex in the early 1970s when her children were growing up. She joined the Scout Association in 1981 firstly as a Cub Leader until 1989, then Scout Leader until 2004 and currently as an Explorer Scout Leader (Young Leaders). In 2000 Margaret took on the additional role of ADC (Adult Training) becoming a Local Training Manager in North East Essex in 2003. Continuing to work with both young people and adults she has complemented her County Training Team role with one of Young Leader Advisor on the County Explorer Team. With the impending changes in the appointment process and greater use of computerised data, she has ventured into her first Administrator role of District Appointments Secretary.

In 2001 Margaret become an adult volunteer at Headquarters joining the Adult Training Working Group the year before the launch of the current training scheme, transferring to the National Moderation Panel on its formation in 2004 as a Regional Training Adviser until 2008.

Margaret works in an NHS Foundation Trust within the Education and Training Directorate running a Unit that trains and supports staff to assess and deliver high quality healthcare. In her spare time when not scouting she enjoys gardening, mountain and long distance walking and sailing ocean-going yachts.

Gyles sits on the Adult Training Steering Group as a Project Co-ordinator. He co-ordinates a number of projects commissioned by the Adult Trainig Steering Group. He works with Project Leaders and Project Workers to ensure projects are completed.

Gyles has been in Scouting for over 25 years and is a Queen Scout. He has held appointments as a Scout Leader, Venture Scout Leader and with the formation of Explorer Scouts, District Explorer Scout Commissioner. His focus has always been to put back in what he feels he has gained and as such has been a trainer for almost 15 years, originally as an ADC Leader Trainer and when the new Adult Learning Scheme went live, County Training Manager, all in Hertfordshire. His first role at headquarters was the the role of a Regional Training Adviser.

When he's not Scouting he works professionally as a Sales Trainer and Coach in the Pharmaceutical Industry. If there is any time left over he spends it with his girlfriend in the mountains as they are both British Mountaineering Council Mountain Leaders.

Mike Kerrigan is chair of the Adult Training Support Team (ATST) and line manager to the Regional Training Advisers. As chair of the ATST he has an automatic place on the Adult Training Steering Group.

Mike started in Scouting at the age of eight as a Wolf Cub in London. His first involvement as an adult in Scouting was in the early 80s as a Group Chairperson in a Group in New Forest West Scout District. He soon moved on to be the Group Scout Leader of the same Group. Mike has held many roles in Scouting and is currently the lead volunteer of the Appointment Process project for the Adults in Scouting Working Group, a Local Training Manager in Hampshire and still helps with a Cub Pack when he can.

Mike works as a self-employed training consultant.

Until a new RTA is appointed, Mike will be supporting the CCs and CTMs in GLSW, GLSE, GLS and British Scouts Western Europe.

Howard Hills is the Learning and Development Adviser to the Adult Training Steering Group.He had a short spell as a Scout Leader in Sussex in 1968-70 but a career in the Royal Navy meant a long break until 1984 when he became a Venture Scout Leader in Surrey. Since then he has held various (and multiple) roles as ADC (Activities), County Assessor for Hill walking, County Leader for activities, ADC (VS) then DESC moving to his current role of LTM in Surrey in 2004 where he concentrates all his Scouting activities on training adults. He is also Training Manager and adult trainer for the Explorer Scout Section and delivers training in Presenting and Facilitating. He is a Queen’s Scout which he gained as a Senior Scout in 1962.

Howard’s professional background is in corporate Training, a career in the Royal Navy, senior positions in a large UK Bank and then a global Accountancy practice. For the last 8 years he has been self employed mainly as an adviser and consultant implementing the use of technology for training. He has written two books on training and several dozen magazine articles.

Mike started scouting as a Scout aged 11 and progressed to Senior Scouts. He then left Scouting until the early eighties when he was asked to be Executive Chair for a local Coventry Group. After this role he become a Scout Leader when his sons joined the Scout Troop. Five years later he became a Venture Scout Leader. But due to work commitments he changed his role to Asistant District Commissioner (Scouts) and then to Assistant District Commissioner (Leader Training). When the new Adult Training Scheme was launched he became the County Training Manager for Coventry.

Mike is professionally employed as a Health and Safety Consultant/Trainer for a midlands based consultancy, travelling the world providing advice and training.

Jennifer began Scouting in 1968 as an ACSL in Sussex, while training as a Primary teacher. With only a break overall of 4 years she has continued Scouting in UK, BSWE, N Ireland and Cyprus, returning to UK in 1994. Her roles have been just as varied, moving from the Cub Scout Section to GSL then ADC(AT), ACC(AT) in Norfolk and DCC (Adult Support). Jennifer became CTM in Norfolk for the start of changes in the Adult Training Scheme and currently works in that role and that of DCC(AS). Her teaching is now part-time, so that she can keep Scouting.
